I pushed my sleeves up as a trickle of sweat rolled down the back of my neck. An Indian Summer warmed the book store as I browsed the aisles. I took my time wandering about, killing time while I waited for my best friend, Kymberly. She was outside getting her caricature drawn, a gift for her newest boyfriend, Connor.

A soft, humid breeze wafted through the store, rattling a silver and pink crystal windchime above the door. The melody caught my attention and I looked to the entrance. From beyond the opened door, I could see Kym out in the square posing for the street artist. I wiggled my fingers in her direction then stuck my tongue out playfully before heading deeper into the store's interior. Since we were vacationing in New Orleans, I decided to pick up a few books to read as I had regretfully left my e-reader at home.

I found a few made-for-tourist books on the Big Easy and pulled a couple off of the bookcase to buy. Sure, I could probably find most of the information online, but there was something charming about buying real books to take home. Tucking them under my arm, I continued to browse the aisles.

I came across a book tucked away under the 'Local Authors' section about paranormal beasts and monsters. It immediately drew my attention and my heart skipped a beat. I instinctively gave a glance around, then pulled it from the shelf and flipped it open. "Isla Rouse," I read the author's name aloud as I glanced at her picture on the book jacket. She was stunningly beautiful for her age, which was hard to guess. Her face was smooth, her hair sleek, pulled back into a low ponytail. Her eyes were luminous, large, and knowing. I could tell that she was an old soul. I thumbed through the pages though I knew I didn't have time to read much because Kym would be waiting for me outside.

After I made my purchases, I found Kym and we finished out the morning by doing two ghost tours and stuffing ourselves with baguettes and pralines. I had a fun time hanging out with her but I kept thinking about the book, and was eager to find some quiet time alone to read.

At midday, Connor texted to tell her the guys had made it to the hotel. I was thankful that Sam, Kym's younger brother, brought a friend, because I really didn't want it to feel like a couples' vacation. Kymberly swore Sam had a crush on me, but I had never felt the same about him. Plus, I didn't think I was over Jake yet, despite having not seen him in months.
